Colossians Series: Legalism

Ball and ChainI changed pace a little this week by taking a larger section on at one time. We’ve been going through almost scripture by scripture until this week. This works well for some sections of Colossians, but for Col. 2:11-23 I wanted to cover it all in one sermon.

In this section of Colossians, Paul sets up a great argument against a works-based and religious view of Christianity not only because it is an affront to Jesus’ work at the cross, but it is ineffective as a tool against sin. He demonstrates that attempting to please God with a system of rules devoid of Christ will not only be an offense to the cross of Christ, but it will not work as a weapon against our flesh.

Colossians Series, Part 3

We moved into chapter 2 of Colossians this week. We picked up on two big themes that I’ll highlight for you here.

I encourage you to read along in Colossians as we make our way through these powerful and life-giving truths.

Colossians Series, Part 2

We continued on with our series on the book of Colossians. Last week we stopped with what I think is the centerpiece of the book, verses 15-18. This week we stepped through Col. 1:19-23 where we discover the great mystery of this supreme Jesus, coming to us, dying for us, choosing us and thus conveying us from being slaves to sin, to slaves to Christ.

Colossians Series, Part 1

Jesus on the CrossWe began our series on Colossians this week. I’m just taking it scripture by scripture from start to finish. I have a couple goals with this series. First, I believe the theme of the supremacy of Christ is vital to understanding our individual purposes as well as participating in the mission of the Church as a whole. Secondly, preaching this way is instructive in how to study the Bible and extract meaning within the context of the original audience and the book as a whole. Often just understanding the history around the book (especially when you are reading a Pauline letter like Colossians) is enough to clarify difficult passages.

I won’t go into the detail that I did Sunday because it doesn’t necessarily translate well into blog form. So here are the high spots…

The Nature of the Love of God

Crown of ThornsWe’re human. We tend to forget the important things like taking time with our kids, rest, grace, and God’s love for us. I think this happens because we allow other more aggressive things like work, finances, busyness, etc to impose wrong priorities on us. So this week I endeavored to remind us all (including myself) how much God loves us.

If you’re a John Piper fan, some of this will be familiar. I’ve been reading a lot of him lately. His stuff really gets in your blood…

Touching the Untouchables

Jesus HomelessWe took a look this weekend at two events in the ministry of Jesus that show us how we are to treat the outcasts in our culture.

First there’s the woman with the issue of blood read from the account in Mark 5:25-34. Leviticus 15:19-28 tells us what the Law said about women who had this problem. Not only were they themselves unclean, but every thing and every person that they came into contact with was deemed unclean. Every place they sat, every thing they touched, every man they were with would be “infected”. This poor woman had spent all she had on doctors trying all manner of things to fix her. None had succeeded, and in fact scripture says that the “treatments” had only made things worse.
