Why Nickelodeon Needs a Kick in the Pants
// March 31st, 2009 // Family Life
I like to toss a rant-bomb into tween pop-culture now and then and it always makes people mad. I really should stop myself, but I can’t help it. I have a daughter that is racing at a screaming (or, I should say, squealing) pace into tweendom so my opinions run a little stronger in this department.
So here I go again, rant-bomb incoming…
Dear Nickelodeon,
I would like to make an appointment with whoever programmed the lineup for your recent “Kids Choice Awards” show. This appointment would have one singular action item on the agenda: me kicking you in the pants repeatedly until you promise to NEVER have the Pussycat Dolls perform on your stage ever again.
Last I checked, I’m not a prude. I just can’t imagine how any sane person could think that a parade of plastic women dressed like Vegas strippers and “personal escorts”, singing about “when I grow up I want to be famous” was a good thing for 10 year old girls and boys to cheer for. Nevermind the fact that the album they were nominated for is titled “Doll Domination”. Seriously? (Now that I’ve typed that title on this blog I’m going to be getting some “interesting” Google search hits in my stats…)
This isn’t about my kids. They didn’t go anywhere near it. It’s about all the parents out there that are so asleep at the wheel that they don’t see a problem with their little girls wanting to act like high-price prostitutes so that they can be famous.
Wake up.

Awesome. Retweeted.
I don't even have kids but I feel the same way. It actually disgusts me to see supposed "role models" to our kids being that of the Pussycat Dolls and other high-trash celebrities.
I miss you Mr. Rogers (RIP)
I hear you. I feel the same way. It's even more crazy that so many parents are raising their kids in a way that causes them to look to pop culture for a role model to begin with.
It tears me up inside knowing that many people don't even realize the implications of their children viewing (even idolizing, imitating) this kind of stuff.
Me too. Makes even more nuts when Christians are blind to it.
SWEET.
I totally agree with you about this ~ we don't watch Nick or Disney at all any more because of this issue… We're right there with ya:)
I couldn't believe it when I heard they were going to be performing either. It is bad for girls, but it is equally bad for boys…does Nick really think it's okay for my little tween boy to be watching those WOMEN parade around scantily clad? How crazy is it that they had the group that just a couple of years ago was singing …"don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me? Don't cha wish she was a freak like me?" It's unbelievable.
