How to be a Jackass for Jesus

Please welcome guest blogger Martha Cotten to the site.  Thanks for contributing, Martha!  ~Ben

I spend a lot of time wondering where my place is in the world.  Wondering what I’m doing with my life, and if I am making the right choices.  I realize how short life is and how each decision I make is crucial to not wasting my time on earth.

That being said, while reading “The Pursuit of God”, by AW Tozer, he mentioned that our proper place with God was as the donkey on Palm Sunday.   I was struck with how funny and how fitting a description that was to what God has called us.   The little lowly donkey whose reputation is stubbornness and laziness.  The animal that won’t move unless he has a carrot in front of his nose or is being prodded with a stick.  The animal whose name is now used as a pejorative.  This is who Jesus chose to carry him into Jerusalem? ( Zech. 9:9 and Mark 11)

Do you see? The same question goes for us.  I ask him, “Me, Lord? Have you MET me?  Did you SEE me yesterday?”  Yet he chooses to use us – disgraceful, inexperienced, unbroken-in, loud and braying — he uses us to bring himself glory.

What a privilege to carry Jesus to people and hear them cry “Hosanna!”   What more can we seek from life than to be a vehicle to lift Jesus up and carry him to others so that they might see and praise him?  Oh, how this simplifies my life!  If I can only be a jackass for him, I will have accomplished more than I can dream and more than many do.

  1. That’s good. Or we could also be that “other” famous donkey in scripture: Baalam’s Ass (which, incidentally would be a great name for a Christian band). A donkey who rebuked the prophet when he was straying from what God had called him to do. I like how Rich Mullins put it: “In the Bible God spoke through an ass and has been speaking through them ever since.” ‘Nuff said.

I love it .now this is real. this is what we need to realize as we walk out our lives with Jesus that most of the time we are just are acting like a donkey and thank you from Mexico about Baalam's Ass. At the same time I want to love people as Jesus did all the time. Thanks so much Ben for taking the time for this Blog. It is much needed and I am sure this is the way.
