Paul Newman – A Real Cool Hand
// September 30th, 2008 // Movies, Video
Paul Newman has died at age 83. I thought I’d post a clip from one of my favorite movies, “Cool Hand Luke”.
It’s interesting to me that Newman has very few lines in this scene and the camera focus is rarely on him yet he remains the focal point. Maybe that’s what they call “presence”.

“Cool Hand Luke” is also one of my all-time favorite movies. I especially like the famous egg eating scene and of course how Luke has to deal with the sadistic prison warden (whose character was resurrected in “Brother Where Art Thou?” – another one of my all-time faves).
I also liked Newman in “The Great Escape” – how he would sit in solitary confinement and throw that baseball against the wall. He was an American icon who will certainly be missed on the silver screen.
The Great Escape was AWESOME. I almost posted a video for that too. That scene with him bouncing the ball is iconic.
uhhhhh….The Great Escape starred Steve McQueen. Paul Newman wasn’t in the cast.
My, my! Young people these days.
You’re so right! Does the ball bouncing scene come from Cool Hand Luke, then? Or was that S. Mc. in the Great Escape? I can’t remember now.
Now that the two images of the men in prison are mixed in my mind, I can’t remember either. I think the ball scene is McQueen in Escape.
Hahaha! David you got me on that one! Yes, it WAS Steve McQueen in “The Great Escape.” To my defense, I always did get the two actors confused…but…you got me!
