Twitters Never Lose

// September 9th, 2008 // Twitter

I’ve caved.  I’m on Twitter now.  When I first heard about Twitter, I thought the whole idea was really stupid.  I called it the online version of The Hills.  However, I’ve been thinking about this concept and I’ve changed my tune a bit.

The social networking craze has some positive aspects to it.  Mainly, the ability to communicate and stay in touch with a lot of people in one place.  The thing that I hate about Facebook and MySpace is that it creates an environment where I’m not in control of the flood of “communication” that comes at me.  When someone writes on my wall in Facebook, there is an expectation that I respond.  It’s like an invitation for everyone to put more emails in my inbox, whether I want them to or not.  And let’s be honest, at least 70% of the communication that we all get from Facebook is junk.  I just got “poked”!  Well, now I’m expected to poke back?  No thanks.

Twitter is social networking on my terms.  You choose who you follow.  And you aren’t their “friend”.  There’s no expectation of some kind of inane back and forth emailing and messaging.  If you want to know what’s going on with me, you check.  Don’t care?  No problem.  You can not care and nobody gets hurt and I don’t get an inbox full of “friends” poking me and sending me virtual beer.
