Living in Self-Forgetfulness
// June 3rd, 2008 // Christian Living, Video
Adrian Warnock recently did an interview with John Piper. In it, he asks him about why his preaching is so passionate and seems to have such an impact. Piper’s response is humble and insightful. He says that the thing he prays for in his preaching is “self-forgetfulness”. That he would get past the awkwardness of self-awareness where he is constantly rating himself, wondering what to do with his hands, worrying about saying everything just right, etc. He wants to be in the moment, focussed and immersed in the text and in the interaction between him, the text, God, and the people to whom he is preaching.
I think this is not just true for preaching, but for life. Our prayer should be that we would live life in blissful self-forgetfulness, not rating and grading ourselves constantly wondering if we are making the grade. We should be seeking to live immersed in the moment, focussed on the interaction between us, the scripture, God, and each other.
I just wrote a post at the KCC Blog about the importance of recognizing (and living in) how much Jesus loves us. I think this is the only way we can live the way that John Piper suggests.

Self-forgetfulness is part of abiding in Christ. In order to be conscious of being in communion with Him, one’s eyes of the heart have to be off of self.
