Through Their Eyes

// November 20th, 2007 // Family Life

BeachThis week we are spending time in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. My parents rented a wonderful house that is actually big enough to house our entire family…kids and all! We have a view of the ocean from the porch with a pier right next to it and a view of the sound from the windows on the other side of the house. We got here too late last night for the kids to be able to tell that there was water out there.

This morning when we got up, they saw the water and couldn’t get out there fast enough. Eliana and Owen have never seen the ocean. I was looking forward to their reactions and was curious if they were going to be scared, excited or unsure. We went out there and as soon as Owen hit the sand he was good. He started picking up sand and throwing it in the air and trying to eat it. Eliana immediately headed for the water. I took her shoes off so she could feel the water on her feet. We stood waiting for the water when it came over her feet. She held her breath and when the water receded she said “Whoa” and held on. Her balance was totally off but she was loving it. After awhile she played a game of chase with the waves and was devastated when we had to go. Owen was not interested in the water at all. When I put his foot in the water he cried and just wanted to get back to the sand. Kaitlyn on the other hand was not at all unsure. She was wanting to get in all the way…it being late November of course my answer was no, but she managed to “fall down” and get fully wet. She was in heaven.

I loved seeing the different reactions of all the kids….the joy and wonder that I got to see in their eyes. This is one of the best things about having kids…seeing the world through their eyes. It definitely makes life more interesting!

    Sometimes I wish I was mature enough to keep such a perspective!

    @Sarah – It is a huge house. Can’t believe we are staying here. 3 stories full of rooms, hot tub, game room, etc, etc. We may not come back… ;-)
