Steven Delopoulos: Straightjacket

Steven Delopoulos - straightjacketI’ve been a fan of Steven Delopoulos for a little while now. I regularly get burned out on the huge influx of bubble gum music that is thrown at me from both secular and Christian media outlets. I get tired of simplistic lyrics that require no thought or digging for meaning. I get tired of over-processed vocals that are so pitch corrected they end up sounding like soulless robots.

It’s not that I can’t enjoy a good pop tune. I can, and do. But it doesn’t take long for me to get sick of it. I relate it to what it’s like to eat cotton candy. By the time you’ve eaten half of it, you start feeling sick. You find yourself craving something organic. Something real.

That’s where Steven Delopoulos comes in for me. He has just released a new album called “Straightjacket”. You can download it from his website for a low price right now. It’s excellent. Now, if you are looking for fast-food lyrics and instant gratification music, you may be disappointed (then again, maybe your musical pallet will be expanded?). Some of his music is clearly born from moments of struggle. Lyrically it’s more like poetry that only gives a framework for the thought and then makes you dig for the rest. Not to mention his guitar work is stellar.

This is not your typical CCM fodder. And that’s why I like it.

Derek Webb (formally of Caedmon’s Call, now solo) says this:

Steven Delopoulos is a complete mystery to me. His music is full of a transcendent wonder and poetic grit that I don’t hear coming from any other contemporary artists. Straightjacket is a strange journey of language and melody that I never seem to grow tired of revisiting…I’m still completely baffled as to how he does it.

Here are two videos featuring songs from the album. The first starts with a brief explanation from Steven on his songwriting process and then a live studio performance of “Another Day”. The second video is a really cool video rendition of a song called “The Ruin of the Beast”.

UPDATE:

The album is now available on iTunes, DRM Free.

My Talented Nephew

This is my nephew Andrew in his first YouTube appearance.

My favorite moment is when Mom says to another brother off camera, “No, you be quiet.”

What Not to Get Me for Christmas

There are many things about growing up that are great. I’m not one of these people that says “I’ll never grow up”. I’ve grown up, and it’s awesome. It’s not boring and I’m not serious all the time. But, I’ll admit that the Christmas presents tend to decrease in greatest with each passing year. I remember when I first noticed it. I think I was about 15 years old. Every year, my uncle got us 3 brothers great gifts. My pocket knife fetish was begun by my uncle. He got man gifts. Gifts that we could tell that he had bought for us.

Then when I was about 15, I got a travel alarm clock and some socks. Dress socks, even. It was clear to all 3 of us what tragedy had occurred. My aunt had done the shopping that year. We knew that every year thereafter would be similar. We were growing up.

So, this year I’m going to make an attempt at heading off the bad gifts with a preemptive strike.

Before you give me the “Reason for the Season” speech. Pipe down. Relax. Enjoy my sense of humor. I’ll do a serious post about Christmas and how materialism makes me angry a little later. Like closer to Christmas.

Happy Anniversary!

Just thought I’d mention that as of November 21st, this blog was one year old.

It’s been through some changes, but the first post was on November 21, 2006.

I’m curious… has anyone out there been reading this blog since that first post? I’d be REALLY surprised since things have changed so much since then.

Weekend Thoughts

Short post today. I’m on vacation and have intentionally shut my brain off except for the functions required for survival (ie. diaper changing, eating, breathing, digestion, and channel changing, etc).

Some quick links, thoughts, and a video. Enjoy your weekend!

10 Things I’m Thankful For

It’s Thanksgiving Tomorrow! I’ve always loved Thanksgiving. The family, the food, the tryptophan overdoses, the joy of relaxing while your kids run in circles screaming with all their cousins.

I won’t be posting tomorrow because there will be a turkey to ingest and a subsequent nap to enjoy. I’m sorry, but I have my priorities.

What are you thankful for?
Plenty of room in the comments. Make yourself at home…

Here’s what I’m thankful for:
