Weekend Thoughts

// October 5th, 2007 // Random Thoughts, Video

Welcome to Friday! We’ve had a good week. Heather and I really enjoyed doing the two posts on What Men/Women Want. It’s fun to do little projects like that together. Heather’s post about Halloween turned into a great conversation too.

Here are some bullet points and two hilarious videos to kick off the weekend.

  • We tried to switch my middle daughter (2 years old) to a toddler bed this week. That didn’t go well AT ALL. She kept getting out of bed and crying while standing in the middle of the room half asleep. I finally figured out that she just wasn’t ready to handle not having the boundaries of a crib yet. It made her feel insecure not to have the high crib walls. There’s a larger lesson to be learned about parenting here somewhere…
  • You may have noticed that you are getting full RSS feeds from us now. I finally figured out how to hack WordPress to allow full feeds while using the “Read More…” link at the same time. I don’t like putting the entire post on the first page because it clutters up your first page making it hard to sift through the content (which breaks web design rule #1 – the home page should direct visitors to content, not overwhelm them with all your content at once). Don’t know what RSS is? Check this post out from the archives, and subscribe to our feed right away!
  • We watched Facing the Giants this Wednesday night. I really enjoyed it. The movie was produced almost entirely by church volunteers. Despite some stiff acting in places, I thought it was good. It’s a great story with some real depth and insight in it. I’m looking forward to where Christian film making is going.
  • Some cool articles: Lore Sjöberg wrote a funny post about investing. He always makes me laugh out loud. Here’s a good, short review of Tony Campolo’s book Letters to a Young Evangelical at Revolution. And Resurgence posted a great article on work and it’s importance in the kingdom of God. All worth a read!
  • Here are two videos of prank telemarketer calls. You may have heard Tom Mabe on the radio before. He keeps a tape recorder attached to his phone and when a telemarketer calls he plays with them a while and records it. TOO FUNNY!

First, a telemarketer discovers that his call makes him a suspect in Tom’s alleged murder…

WARNING: There is some rough language in this one. Nothing that you wouldn’t hear on tv, but you probably don’t want you kids repeating…

And a guy selling cemetery plots and finds that Tom is about to kill himself, so asks for a credit card…

    Those are hilarious! My strategy is to try and sell the telemarketers something…

    Care to share with me the secret of the full RSS / Read More? I’m doing excerpts on my home page because I don’t want to put too much on it, but I think being able to use the more tag might be better– depending on what your solution is… (you should create a plugin, if possible!)

    I just watched Facing the Giants the other day as well. There were a few shots that didn’t look as good for whatever reason, and my wife wasn’t that impressed by the father in the wheel chair’s acting, but it was a great and timely message. Seems that people expect to have great miracles happen today– when miracles are happening all around them.

    Actually, I just found a plugin for it. I don’t know how I missed this before. I haven’t tried it, but looks to be the ticket.

    If that doesn’t work, edit /wp-includes/post-template.php

    Around line 83, find this line: if ( preg_match('//', $content, $matches) )

    Change that to if ( preg_match('//', $content, $matches) && !is_feed() ) {

    I’ll probably try the plugin so that upgrades don’t overwrite the code changes.

    Love the Tom Mabe stuff – those calls are hilarious. But just as a warning to other parents – the first video is not necessarily safe for younger ears thanks to some language.

    Thanks for the link and the pointers!

    Thanks, Rodney. I edited the post to include a warning for that one.
