It’s the little things
It is fun finding the surprising things that bring you joy. Of course, there are the obvious ones like the Lord (who I am nothing without), my husband who is an amazing man, my children and the little amazing things that they do all day, spending time with my friends, etc. But, I am talking about the things that sneak up on you. Those are sometimes the things that make a hard situation easier or a stressful time peaceful.
Many people know our current living situation. Ben has taken a pastoring position in Kernersville, NC. This is two hours away from where we currently live and are trying to sell our house (anyone need a house in the Raleigh area??? Shameless plug there…sorry!). So, what this means is that we travel on the weekends and Ben travels once during the week for a meeting and doing stuff at the office. He is able to do the rest of what he needs to do from home. We have fallen into a routine with it and it really isn’t that bad. I can say though that I am amazed by the women who’s husbands travel for a living. It is hard being separated!
What has been hardest in this is when Ben leaves on Wednesdays and I have the three kids here. With the house on the market, I am having to keep it spotless at all times. Having three small children poses a small problem in this area, but I am quickly learning that if I stay on top of it all the time that it isn’t that bad.
What is funny to me is the joy I am finding in it. I actually really love having a clean house..not just straight but really clean. It is worth picking up all day and cleaning in the down times with the kids. It is worth staying home more in order to maintain it. Even if I just have a few hours in the night and morning to enjoy it, it is worth it. I feel so much more at peace when it is all clean.
Another little thing that brings me joy is reading a good book. I have felt like I am too busy to actually enjoy one, but it is really nice to escape into a story even if it is just for a short time. You find that it is actually more enjoyable then sitting in front of the t.v. or in front of the computer (although I do those things too).
I find joy in being outside (when it isn’t too hot) and going on a walk. It is especially amazing when you can do it somewhere that has breathtaking views (hmm…Boone, NC) or where there isn’t a lot of traffic. There is just something about getting some fresh air and enjoying God’s beauty. It brings such a satisfaction.
There are other things as well that bring glimmers of joy, but I will leave it at that for now. I hope that there are little things that bring you joy in your day to day life. The Bible does say to “Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice” So, even when life is difficult make sure you find the things to rejoice in…even if they are the littlest things!
