Is Jesus Who He Claims to Be?
// August 18th, 2007 // Christian Living
This series I’m doing on the book of Colossians has been provoking me personally. As I read these verses extolling and defending the full supremacy of Christ I am convicted that my actions often do not reflect my theology in this area (and others, I’m sure).
If I am in unity with Christ as scripture says I am, and He is as wonderful, powerful and loving as He claims to be then why do I hesitate to trust Him so often? Why do I ignore His voice so regularly? Why do I stop short of asking Him for healing, restoration and even miracles?
I suppose it’s a combination of factors, like the tide gradually wearing away the beach. We let the the stresses and false philosophies of modern life erode our faith until it becomes little more than an idea and a memory held in place only by dogma and rote religious practice. Days, weeks or even months go by without ever speaking to Him outside of a worship service or mealtime prayer.
Our relationship with Jesus becomes like a marriage where the husband and wife live in the same house, but rarely talk. They never stop to look in each others’ eyes. They rarely even come in physical contact with each other because they have become so exclusively consumed with their own lives and agendas. Eventually, we ourselves are pulled out with the tide and don’t even notice.
I’m tired of holding back, aren’t you? Tired of putting God in a box. No matter how big my box is, it’s still too small to contain Him. Let’s start asking God for the hard stuff. Let’s start expecting His promises to be fulfilled. Let’s pray for the sick, take risks and leaps of faith because we really do believe Jesus is who He claims to be.
Let’s start acting like it really is all about His glory.
