How Jesus Helped Me Mow My Grass

Mowing the GrassSome of you will be blessed by this post. Others of you will laugh. And perhaps a few of you will think I’m a religious nutcase who has no business procreating. But, isn’t that what blogging is all about!?

So I’m mowing my grass this afternoon. I have nearly an acre of lawn, no trees and very little landscaping. The house is only 2 yrs old and we have been too busy raising children and quitting jobs to plant trees. All this to say, there’s nothing but grass and dandelions out there.

And I have a push mower.

It’s really really HOT today and no trees = no shade. I mowed the front yard which consists of about 1/3rd of the lawn. Now I’m not afraid of work. I can lay down right beside it and go to sleep. Like a baby. But today I have a lot to do. I have 2 websites I have to finish. A sermon to write. Mouths to feed. And I probably need to repent to my wife for something (I’ll have to ask her). The front yard took about 1.5 hours. The back easily takes 2 or more.

I started in on the back yard mumbling to myself about how I had better things to do. My heart was nowhere near the vicinity of right. But soon my grumbling turned to grumbling prayer. You know the kind. When you pray to God in a whiny tone about how hard your life is. My kids do it to me all the time and it makes my head hurt. As I’m there pushing the lawnmower over my dandelion farm complaining to God my AMAZING neighbor comes running out his back door waving at me.

I waved back.

He motioned for me to cut the mower off and come over.

I did.

As I walked his way, he opened his shed, cranked his riding lawnmower up and backed it out. He hopped off and said,

Man, use my tractor.
I don’t want to use your tractor, I said.
Use it. It’s too hot and you’re killing me out here sweating while I’m inside. Just use it.

I didn’t argue, but rather hopped on his mower and started cruising. It was glorious. I took down that yard in 20 minutes easy. The whole time I was grinning like a crazy man. I couldn’t hold it in. In this small way, Jesus was saying “I love you, you little whiner.”

He didn’t smite the grass with the fires of Gehenna like I asked, but this will do just fine.
