Jesus Loves Me: Keeping it Simple

Last night my 2 year old daughter woke up crying. That’s not unusual since she occasionally wakes up wanting a drink or something. I went in to find out what the fuss was about and found her inconsolable. I held her while she continued to cry. She was still half asleep and had apparently had a bad dream. She was confused and still pretty much asleep.

She cried and cried.

My wife came in and I handed her over. Heather began singing “Jesus Loves Me” in a quiet tone and the effect was instantaneous and dramatic. My daughter fell silent, laid her head on Heather’s shoulder and went to sleep peacefully. I don’t think she ever really woke up at all.

I don’t know what it was about that song that worked. Was it the power of the name of Jesus in the song? The love expressed through it by her Mom? The peace of God expressed in the song? Or was it just the familiarity of Heather’s voice? I’m not sure. I think it was a combination of all those things.

Nevertheless, it was a powerful moment. I have to admit, tough-guy Daddy got a little misty-eyed there in the dark amongst the Barbies and play kitchen-ware. It was a gentle reminder that it’s the simple truths that make our lives work. Love, compassion, trust in Jesus as our hero and Savior.

Isn’t that often all we need to hear? That Jesus loves us accompanied by the encouragement of one that we trust?

As we are inundated by all kinds of complicated counseling methods, prosperity messages and the like may we not forget the source of our help: Jesus Loves Us.
