My Wife is my Key to a Happy Marriage
// June 21st, 2007 // Family Life
As a celebration of my 9th wedding anniversary yesterday and as a sequel to my recent “Marriage Advice” post, I thought I would share with you my secret to my happy marriage.
Her name is Heather Cotten.
Here are ten reasons why I think she is the best woman God ever created. Seriously. EVER.
- I’m not the most important man in her life. Jesus is.
- She totally digs me. Even when I don’t remind her of her wedding vows and show her the pictures of the wedding to remind her that she was of sound body and mind and was not drunk or otherwise impaired when she said “I do”.
- Cheescake, shrimp casserole, parmesian chicken, no-bake cookies and omelets. Life is good.
- She laughs at my jokes. Even though I tell the same stories over and over not caring if people have heard them before, she still manages to chuckle. It may be a courtesy laugh, but I’ll take it!
- She makes cute babies. Trust me, they are cute in spite of me. My children are miracle babies. Somehow they look like me, only cute and without the strange odor. My kids are cuter than speckled puppies frolicking in a flowered field while kittens chase a ball of string. Go ahead and throw in Haley Joel Osment and Dakota Fanning singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in perfect harmony. Still cuter.
- She’s an incredible mother. Morph together June Cleaver, Mother Teresa and Joan of Arc and you’ll be close. She works harder than anyone I know and never complains. She lays down her life daily for my 3 child-tornadoes. She will wip them into shape in a heart beat and woe to anyone who treats them lightly or with contempt. If my daughters turn out to be anything like her, I will be a happy man.
- She loves me. She loves me when I’m being good to her. She loves me when I’m being a boneheaded, dimwitted, jerk of a guy. She loves me when I listen. She loves me when I don’t listen and just try to fix her like a machine. She loves me when I’m involved. She loves me when I’m passive. She loves me when I take out the trash. She loves me when I let it pile up so high even the flies get grossed out. She loves me when I tick her off. She even loves me when I hurt her.
- She lets me be a man. She doesn’t try to feminize me, pretty me up, stop me from watching action movies, make me wear sweater vests, or stop having opinions about everything. She wants me to be manly, decisive and a leader. In fact, she demands it.
- She still gives me butterflies. When we go on dates, I still get butterflies in my stomach and sweaty palms. After 9 years, she still does it for me. She still causes me to stammer like a 12 year old and scheme ways to get a little closer to her.
- She’s my biggest fan. My wife supports me to the ends of the earth. She is always encouraging me, pushing me forward to charge into my destiny. She cheers me on when I need it, and she gives me a kick in the rear when I need it. She knows me like no one else. She believes in me.
