S.M. Lockridge Soundbite — That’s My King!

This is a famous preaching moment from S.M. Lockridge. Apparently, he improvised this at the end of a sermon one day.

Thanks to the good folks at Kernersville Community Church for turning me on to this one!

Steven Delopoulos – Give Him a Listen

Steven Delopoulos

Anybody remember Burlap to Cashmere? Well, the lead singer (if there really was one) has done some solo projects and it’s some really good stuff. He has kind of a folk rock vibe. His guitar playing is excellent but it’s his voice and lyrics that really stand out.

Recently I have been getting frustrated with the bulk of Contemporary Christian Music because the lyrics seem so shallow. Maybe it’s that I’m getting older and therefore my expectations have changed. Whatever the reason, I’m really digging this guy.

He has made some of his music available by free download. Click the image to get it. I’ve uploaded these mp3s to the music player (look at the top of the page) on this site so that you can preview it.

Let me know what you think in the comments. Am I the only one who likes this guy?

Team Hoyt – Get’s My Vote for Dad of the Year

I thought I’d give you a nice sarcasm-free, Friday tear jerker. If your heart isn’t warmed by this story, then you probably didn’t cry when Old Yeller and Bambi died either. You have problems. See a therapist. (…ok, well, maybe a little sarcasm…)

As for the rest of you, enjoy your weekend!

Being Excellent Christians

Sing well, Choir...I believe CS Lewis got it right (enlarge the image to see the quote). I do webdesign as a side business. Most of what I do is for churches and other Christian businesses and organizations. The thing that I see over and over again is that the Christian Church has largely been convinced that how we do things doesn’t matter. It’s only what we do that matters. How we present ourselves to the community (and therefore their perception of us), how well we do things internally, and even how wisely we spend our tithe dollars seems to be an abysmally low priority. We quote things like, “What Would Jesus Do?” and say “Jesus wouldn’t care about our website or whether or not the parking lot is paved” as mantras against the prevailing winds of those left-leaning “seeker-sensitive” churches we have heard about.

Do you think that Jesus was a great carpenter or a shoddy one? I suspect that Jesus never once made anything that wasn’t of the best quality, and I assure you that His reputation as a craftsman came long before His reputation as the Messiah!

Choosing a Web Email Service

WebMail ServicesDespite the fact that I’m a self-proclaimed Geek and I do it for a living, I don’t usually write much here about computing and technology. It’s just not what this blog is for. However, occasionally I like to bring in something that may be of use to The SoapBox readers.

Michael Arrington over at TechCrunch has done a nice comparison of the 3 major web mail services out there: Live Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail. If you are still using MS Outlook or a similar email client to fetch your email, you really should look into switching to a service like one of these. If you already use webmail, take a look and see if you are getting the best that the web has to offer.

I personally use Gmail, and I LOVE it. Currently, you can only get Gmail by invitation (though there is word from Google that soon it will be opened up). I have several Gmail invites I can send out if you need one. Let me know in the Comments, and I’ll email it to you. First come, first serve.

Taking it to the Streets… How?

Street Preacher (Click to Enlarge)I came across an interesting article over at Relevant Magazine. In the article, he talks about an excentric character in his town that preaches the Gospel in some unorthodox ways. Most towns have them, and it reminded me of a similar preacher that used to appear on campus while I attended Appalachian State University several years back.

He would come blazing through town about once a month. There was a large grassy area at the center of campus. When the weather was nice enough, it was the hub of activity. This is where this street preacher would go. He carried a giant Bible and shook it in the air like a fiery sword. He would scream so loud his voice cracked. He would shout things like “Homosexuals will be judged by a Holy God!” and “Sinners are going to Hell! All are sinners!” Each bellowing statement was directed at any pedestrian that had the misfortune of walking within 5 feet of him.
